Money and You is part of a suite of revolutionary training programs that I attended in 2004 and serves as a basis of many of my life principles, the other being the Business School Of Entrepeneurs (BSE) and the ITP Itself. All these programs are conducted and organised by Excellerated.com and is chiefly promoted by Excellerated’s founder and CEO, DC Cordova.

I was extremely suprised and deeply humbled when Kerry got in touch with me to ask if I would speak at the ITP as it brought me to the days when I was a participant and how awed I was by the various instructors who spoke there. Though my session was only 3 hours out of the full 5 days, it was one of the most deeply intense that I had conducted. I wanted to make as much impact on the participants as my instructors had on me.

The session went well and I with the participants and future instructors well in their journey of mastery.

Strictly speaking, event management is not one of our activities. Because we set such a high standard of excellence for our own training events, our clients would sometimes ask us to support them in designing and managing their internal events. It is a welcome change from training events and keeps us on our toes. Our training events are quite systemised and comes from hours and days of refining and correcting. Conducting one off events requires us to reinvent and be creative in a short space of time.

Our most recent event was the PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) graduation ceremony for the Business Leaders Programme (BLP) held at JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur on 26 Oct 2010. The event was attended by senior member of PDB management, participants of the BLP Programme as well as participants of the MyPDB Programme (a programme designed for new PDB staff) as well as representatives from the PETRONAS Management Training Center (PERMATA). All told, there were about 100 guests.

The event was a resounding success due to the excellent partnership between the Right Eye Team and PDB’s Human Resources Division and we hope for more such partnership in the future.

Have you ever asked been asked the question ‘Why Are You Here’? This is the very first question I would ask all the Learners in the Me & My Life Programme when they walk into the seminar room for the very first time. Its an important question that doesn’t get asked enough.

I set the following scene at every training seminar that we have,

‘Imagine a person sleeping on a bed.

Imagine this person waking up in the morning.

Imagine this person get ready for work.

Imagine this person having a quick breakfast before getting into the car to rush to work.

Imagine this person arriving at work.

Imagine this person settling down at the workstation, checking email and preparing for meetings.

Imagine this person taking a lunch break.

Imagine this person coming back for lunch, settling down at the workstation, checking email and preparing for meetings.

Imagine this person leaving the workplace, getting into the car to rush home.

Imagine this person arriving at home.

Imagine this person settling down in front of the TV waiting to have dinner.

Imagine this person having dinner with the family.

Imagine this person spending time with the family after dinner.

Imagine this person getting ready for bed.

Imagine this person trying to go to sleep.

Imagine this person waking up in the morning’.

And then I asked how many of my Learners feel that this describes their life. Without fail, everyone will raise their hands. And finally I would ask how many of them have, in despair, asked themselves ‘Is this it? Isn’t there more to my life more than this’? and again everyone would raise their hands.

That life that I described earlier was my life. I’ve asked myself the same questions too. I think a lot of people ask this question with (almost always) a sense of despair.

One of the reasons for this is that we do not have a Sense Of Purpose.

What is a Sense Of Purpose?

Basically its a feeling that we get when feel that there is meaning and reason in our life. It is what distinguishes between mere existence and actual living. It enables us to put everything in our life into a context. That everything happens for a reason. It gives us a sense of destiny and more importantly, it gives us a reason and the will to push through the hard times (Stephen Covey sums it up better than I could ever do in his book The Eight Habit when he talks about leaving a legacy).

This is important for companies too. Without that Sense Of Purpose, people in the company do not have a reason to work other than trying to earn a living. Imagine that story I described above being the story of you and every single employee in your company. Truly scary.

We have all heard of Mission Statements which is the textual form of the Sense Of Purpose. Most companies have them. Unfortunately, the Mission Statement of a company becomes this ‘thing’ that is printed and posted on the wall. It becomes more of an after thought rather than the foundation of what the company does. Why is this so?

I think of the reason why this is so is because Mission Statements are often created almost out of nothing either by the management of the company or as a product of some consulting work the company have gone through. How else could you develop a mission statement you may ask?

In simple terms,

Sense of Purpose (and Mission Statements) cannot be created. It has to be DISCOVERED.

The process of discovery is a long one. It cannot simply be thought of overnight. It is deeply personal for the individual as well as for the company. It should encompass the true meaning of a person’s (or a company’s) existence. Thats why I talk about Sense of Purpose.

I don’t have a Mission Statement for Right Eye at the moment. I do have a very strong Sense Of Purpose which is derived from my own personal Sense of Purpose which can be summed up as follows,

‘We (I) add value by sharing all our experience (good or bad), all the knowledge granted to us, all the skills we had worked hard to acquire, all the talent we have been blessed with and to allow as many people to benefit and become successful from it‘.

It took me over 3 years to discover this Sense Of Purpose which now governs all the decisions that we make and how we do our work. Can this become our Mission Statement? I’m not so sure it can. But at least I know we are heading in the right direction. The existence of this blog which I started only a few days ago, is a tribute to that Sense Of Purpose. The things that we share in our training seminar more often relates to our failures (which are numerous) and mistakes (too many to count). Some are quite dramatic in nature which others are simple illustrations to prove a point. I’ve had people come up to me and ask how I can share such personal stories and I tell them that I’ve come to terms with my failures and mistakes and if people can learn from them then making those mistakes and going through those failures is worth it because it resonates with my Sense Of Purpose.

Back to our Learners from earlier, one of the main aims of the Me & My Life is to create the environment where Learners can begin to discover their Sense of Purpose. Imagine every single employee in your company coming to work every day with a Sense Of Purpose. Truly inspiring.

Have a look at your Mission Statement. Does it make you feel good? Does it govern your actions and decisions? Does it inspire you. If no, it’s never too late to begin the journey into discovering your Sense Of Purpose.

I’ll share the process of how to discover your Sense Of Purpose in a later posting.

Thanks for dropping by.

Both team bonding and team rebuilding are important components of any team building exercise. As a matter of fact, the first part of The Right Eye Training's team workshop almost always involves activities related to team bonding. However, the real work is actually created during the team rebuilding component of the team workshop. The problem arises when clients would request more team bonding activities and yet are reluctant to get into the team rebuilding sessions. While we would prefer a 30:70 team bonding ration we often end up with the opposite 70:30 ratio. I've even had potential clients requesting 100% team bonding. Nothing wrong with that though i turned it down and told them that they can save more money by going to outdoor training centers who will provide the facilitator for a nominal amount when you rent or hire their equipment or facilities.

Tip #1

Since I started training 6 years ago, I have conducted countless numbers of teambuilding training. Indoor, outdoor, 1 day, 2 days, at hotels and resorts, at office premises. Companies in Malaysia big and small recognize the importance of team building.

The major issue that any company organizers (client) would raise is how to make sure that the money spent on organizing these team building trainings can be translated to actual improvements at the workplace.

Sadly, people seem to be missing the point of how to make a team effective at the workplace. 2 main factors would play a role in how the spirit and energy that is created at team building training can be maintained at the workplace even months after.

Factor #1- team bonding or team building?
I always say to my clients that what they call team building is actually a combination of 2 types of training; team bonding and team rebuilding and unless they are absolutely clear on what they want, they may end up with training that cannot solve the problems they face at work.

Team Bonding

Team bonding is about creating an environment where members of an organization (whether a section or a department or a division or even a company) can strengthen their social relationship with one another, in other words get to know each other.

Team Rebuilding

Team rebuilding is about creating an environment where members of an organization can, through facilitation, identify and address specific issues which impacts their ability to effectively work as a team. Examples of these issue includes previous upsets which has not been settled.

Both team bonding and team rebuilding are important components of any team building exercise. As a matter of fact, the first part of The Right Eye Training’s team workshop almost always involves activities related to team bonding. I’ve even had potential clients requesting 100% team bonding. Nothing wrong with that though i turned it down and told them that they can save more money by going to outdoor training centers who will provide the facilitator for a nominal amount when you rent or hire their equipment or facilities.

Factor #2- Single event versus a series of activities

The second factor of why team building training can sometime fail to be translated into the workplace is consistency. There are 365 days in the year. What people need to understand is that spending 2 days out 365 (less than 0.5%) on team building training cannot and does not result in creating effective teams. That doesn’t however mean that you need to go for more training days. Simply put, the team building ‘strategy’ is an all year effort and the team building training is a component of making the team more effective.

How should these 2 factors effect your thinking next time you consider team building training.

Here are some tips..

1. Decide clearly whether you want team bonding or team (re)building
2. Either way, set the expectations clear with your trainer and see if they can provide both. Trainers like me specializes in team rebuilding so getting me to do team bonding events exclusively is probably not a great way to spend your budget.
3. Create a year long Team Strategy which include talks, town halls, teh tarik talks as well as the intervention programmes such as away days and team building training.

Good luck and get in touch with us at info@therighteye.net for more info.

The Right Eye Training program me is called Me & My Team which involves elements of team bonding with more emphasis on team rebuilding. Me & My Team also includes helping your department create a year long Team Strategy as well as providing tools and activities which you can do on your own at the workplace.

This Learner taught me so many things about myself. Even now, I dread to think what would have happened had I given in to my sense of judgement and my ego. I am deeply grateful that common sense prevailed.

This Learner is the reason why we do what we do, no matter how hard or how tired we get.

I remember in one of the Me & My Life Programme session, there was a particularly hostile Learner within the audience. The first 1 hour of any programme that I conduct is devoted to contextualisation or setting the scene. Throughout the entire session, this gentlemen was making snide remarks at any available opportunity. It was as if he had something to say about everything I was sharing. It soon became pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be at the session.

Corporate programmes differ from public programmes in 1 critical aspect and that is the fact that people who get sent to corporate programmes by their company usually do not want to attend the programme and so their behaviour is very different from those who pay their hard earned money to attend.

For me, it means that I had to modify my own behaviour in order to be able to properly address those who did not choose to attend the training. In practical terms I had to be more respectful, more patient, less pushy (until the last minute at least), more compassionate and I dare say, this gentlemen pushed me to my limits.

I had always said that the Me & My Life Programme is designed as a journey. At some point during the programme, the Learners will get it and I just have to trust the programme that I designed. It became obvious to me that I had to do something about it. I don’t mind if people react in a hostile manner to me but when they begin to be disruptive in the room they can actually become a nuisance to the rest of the Learners.

During the morning break, I was discussing the possibility of ejecting this hostile Learner with Terrence (who heads the Logistics team). I had never felt this strongly about anyone in any of the sessions I had conducted. After a long discussion we came to the conclusion that we shouldn’t eject this person from the room. Terrence reminded me of one of the sacred rules of our training which compels us to respect all of our Learners at all times no matter how they are. This respect is about saying that everyone who passes through the door and enters our room will have ‘stuff‘ within them. When I say stuff I mean the insecurities, the history, the ego, the anger and all the things that in ordinary circumstances, we would probably call ‘negative’. Respecting a person ‘stuff‘ is about respecting all the things within them, no matter what our sense of judgement says.

The training went ahead. We did what we were supposed to do. As the hours went by, I detected small changes in behaviour. The hostility within him became less. There were even hints of a smile now and then. By the time we came to the Breakthrough session, this was a completely different person.

By the end of the programme, it was time to say goodbye. He came up to me and looked straight into my eye and told me that he can feel the hair stand at the back of his neck. He shook my had, gave me a hug and just said ‘Thank you’ and left.

This Learner taught me so many things about myself. Even now, I dread to think what would have happened had I given in to my sense of judgement and my ego. I am deeply grateful that common sense prevailed.

This Learner is the reason why we do what we do, no matter how hard or how tired we get.

My great lesson of that day, everyone has got their ‘Stuff‘. Do we choose to see only the ‘Stuff‘ or do we choose to see the greatness in them.

We choose to see greatness…..

I Remember…. is a collection of stories, anecdotes and learnings from our journey that we share with people.

Me & My Life is a corporate transformation programme designed by The Right Eye Training. In the last 1 year, Me & My Life has been conducted 42 times to over 1800 Learners in Malaysia.
